From the Australian Energy Regulator. Every retailer must file every gas plan it offers with the AER, which publishes them through the Consumer Data Right, the same data behind Energy Made Easy and Victorian Energy Compare. We read that feed every night. Prices depend on the gas network you’re on, so we show only the plans filed for your postcode.
Every gas plan is a daily supply charge plus a price for each megajoule (MJ) you use, often cheaper after the first few MJ a day and often dearer in winter. We use the MJ on your gas bill, or the AER’s benchmark for your household and whether you heat with gas, spread over the year so your winter heating falls in winter, and price every plan on it. When your use is our estimate, we also price each plan at a lighter and a heavier year and say which stay cheap either way.
Yes. Retailers file their rates and supply charges without GST, so we add it once. Guaranteed discounts are taken off; a discount you get only for paying on time or by direct debit is shown on the plan but not counted, since it depends on you. A sign-up credit counts in the first year only.
No. Gas and electricity are separate plans, and the cheapest of each often comes from different retailers. A few gas plans are sold only to homes that also take the retailer’s electricity; we show those only if you say you’d move your electricity too, and price the gas on its own.
Some plans can only be taken through a comparison site or a partner, or only by members of a club, seniors card holders, a bank’s customers or existing customers, so we can’t send you to them and we leave them out. Tasmania files no residential gas plans, and WA and the NT aren’t part of the national market.
