How term deposits work

A rate fixed for a term, and what it pays in dollars. Three minutes.

Interest monthly or at the end

Why paid monthly usually pays a little less, worked in dollars.

Term deposit vs savings

A term deposit against a savings account, over the same months.

Interest is the yearly rate times the share of a year the term runs, on the amount deposited; paid along the way, it isn’t added to the deposit. Breaking a deposit early usually needs 31 days’ notice and reduces the interest. The government guarantees up to $250,000 a person at each bank. Tax isn’t taken off. As of 7 November 2026, the highest 1-year term deposit rate on $50,000 among the 72 banks on BankMate is 5.75% at Suncorp, $2,875 of interest over the year.
